Built
atop Hiawassee Georgia’s Whiskey Mountain, the house was built in the late
1950’s. Yolanda and David Keating purchased the property in 1993, at which
time the residence underwent major reconstruction. The Keatings opened
their bed and breakfast, aptly named Mountain Memories Inn, later that
year.
Yolanda, an amazing lady who spent ten years traveling cross-country raising funds for children unable to afford bone marrow transplants, runs the inn. She receives full support from her husband David and Muffin, the inn’s calico cat. Guests never experience a need or desire unfulfilled by Yolanda. She especially revels in catering to guests seeking a getaway specializing in an array of unfolding romantic delights.
The five guest
rooms and one suite at
Mountain Memories Inn each boast a distinctive decor and contain a Jacuzzi
for two, thick terry robes, a queen or king size bed, an armoire
concealing cable TV and VCR, scented candles, magnificent mountain
views.
On the lower
level of the inn, a fireside library/game room beckons guests. The area
includes approximately four-hundred VCR movies, a variety of games, Super
Nintendo, a bumper pool table, a pinball machine, and a jukebox.
This fun-filled area
provides an
excellent spot for individuals interested in visiting other guests, perhaps
over a cup of hot chocolate of cappuccino. Next to the cappuccino/hot chocolate
machine, a cookie jar stays filled with cookies freshly baked by Yolanda.
Complimentary soda is available, as well.
For visits
to Mountain Memories Inn during the spring or summer months, I recommend
Lover’s Room on the main floor. An airy, open room, this bedchamber
features a king-size bed made of knotty white-washed pine. The bed’s carved
headboard matches the carving on the armoire. A Battenburg lace duvet,
dust ruffle, and pillow shams enhance the bed; draped “bridal veil”
netting forms a graceful backdrop for the bed. A platinum-colored moiré
chaise lounge provides an ideal spot for reading or daydreaming while soaking
in the breath-taking mountains surrounding Lake Chatuga below. A door leads
to an adjacent terrace. A Jacuzzi for two, complete with a pair of rubber
duckies and an aromatic candle, faces the bed. A spacious bathroom, with
a double shower stall, good lighting, and ample storage space adjoins
the room.
If planning
a trip during the fall or winter months, consider booking the Fireside
Suite. Like the Lover’s Room, this room has a Jacuzzi for two in
the bedroom area, views of the North Carolina and Georgia mountains, an
exit onto the terrace. In addition, a working fireplace, a comfortable
sofa, and a table for two adds extra coziness.
If there’s a “lot of you” to be loved when you arrive at Mountain Memories Inn, there’s bound to be even more when you leave. But, Yolanda’s gourmet breakfasts, served in a dining area overlooking mountains in three states, are worth the calories. A blazing fire, during cool weather, and soft background music make possible weight gain a momentary non-concern. A sample menu includes orange or apple juice, a fruit compote, a variety of cereals, cheese quiche, homemade coffee- cake and biscuits, sausage gravy, pineapple-topped ham, blueberry pancakes. If you need to eat again before going to bed that evening, a candlelight dessert buffet, consisting of four or five homemade desserts served with coffee or tea, awaits you in the dining room.
Leaving Mountain
Memories Inn, I coast down the incline under a sunny sky. The words “two-gether,
two-gether” waltz in my mind. I’ve found a place where individuals seeking
the ultimate in romance may find rhapsody no matter what the season or
weather. I’m now planning my next trip so I can cruise Lake Chatuga in
Mountain Memories Inn’s pontoon. I can’t think of a better excuse to return
in the spring!
