The Bladensburg Room

"An 18th century Federal style home
of an American hero"

Discovering a B&B the quality of the Commodore Joshua Barney House delights me, but I am amazed when I find such excellence at a newly open inn.  However, after meeting the owner/innkeeper, Susan Betts, I would expect no less.
Driving down the road leading to this secluded estate, one would not expect to find elegance at the end of the road.  But, believe me, it is there -- and finding an inn even better than anticipated is a rarity.
When I arrived at the gated entrance, I key in the security code given to me.  As the gate swings open, I get my first peek behind the stone wall of the historic property.  After a quick glimpse, I know I am in for a treat.

With its melding of history and beauty (exterior and interior), enhanced by an overlay of good taste and gracious hospitality, this inn is not to be missed.  Commodore Joshua Barney House is a preeminent historic inn.

Strong Points

Hospitality plus, location/setting/views, early coffee, attention-to-detail, tasteful décor and furnishings with good color coordination, gated security, beautifully landscaped grounds, porch and patio, well-equipped conference room, impressive array of amenities, complimentary beverages and snacks, in-room phones and high-speed Internet access, excellent setting and facilities for weddings, extended stay apartment (designed for business travelers).

The Oxfordshire

"An historic country estate
in the picturesque Hudson Valley"

I could not have chosen a more pleasant place to stay for my first trip to New York's scenic Hudson Valley.  Steeped in history, dating back to the Revolutionary War, Cromwell Manor is ideally located for exploring an area where places to go and things to see abound.
Purchased two years ago by congenial Cynthia and Jack Trowell, the inn sits upon seven acres of woodlands, lawns, and gardens in a pastoral setting.  In addition to the guest rooms in the manor house, a brick mansion built in 1820, there are additional rooms in The Chimneys Cottage.  This charming Colonial cottage, circa 1764 and the original house on the property, provides my favorite accommodations at the inn: The Oxfordshire featuring original hand-hewn exposed beams and hand-pegged joints.

A highlight of a visit to Cromwell Manor is breakfast, served in an area overlooking serene woodlands.  Prepared by Cynthia, who trained at nearby Culinary Institute of America, the morning repast is worth the trip!  A cookie jar, filled with homemade cookies, is available round-the-clock.
Cromwell Manor offers a tranquil respite which is difficult to leave.

Strong Points

Hospitality plus, location/setting/views, breakfast, refreshments, gardens, patio, free wireless Internet, parking, historical significance, special packages, in-room massage available, early coffee, variety of accommodations available, facilities for small gatherings or executive retreats, turn-down service.
