  As the iron gates are opening to permit entrance to the estate beyond, I am already falling in love with The Inn at Bowman’s Hill. Driving through the exquisitely crafted double gates—ones flanked by fieldstone walls, imposing lanterns, and red geraniums—I know I have succeeded in selecting a truly extraordinary inn for Bill and me to celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary. It turns out to be even more phenomenal than I hoped for or imagined. If only the gates had stayed closed once we entered, we might still be there!
     Mornings at the inn begin with an impressive gourmet breakfast, personally selected from an updated menu. The inn’s signature English-style breakfast (one which becomes Bill’s favorite B&B breakfast ever) consists of fresh farm  eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, mushrooms, baked beans, baby Yukon gold sautéed potatoes, and fried bread. I order lighter fare as I don’t want to skip the first breakfast course—homemade granola served with yogurt and fruit. This mini-feast may be eaten in the dining area (overlooking the manor terrace, pool, and grounds), al fresco, or in the privacy of one’s guest quarters.

   An ideal time to explore the extensive grounds is after an extensive breakfast! The estate is a photographer’s paradise—manicured verdant lawns, a pond featuring a “high shooting” fountain, an orchard sheltering a variety of bird feeders, a picturesque wooden bridge, a romantic gazebo, a large statuary fountain in  the walled courtyard, a decorative bullfrog spouting water into a small fish pond, and a plethora of  mossy baskets filled with colorful flowers.

    Not only are the grounds and pool area magnificent, but there are unique and creatively designed areas within the main house available for guests to enjoy as well. The vine terrace and orchard conservatory, two of my favorite areas at the inn, provide magical spots for guests to enjoy reading, chatting, or indulging in one of the inn’s delicious afternoon treats with a glass of iced tea or a cup of coffee.
        The suites are located in the manor house, and the guest rooms are in the carriage house (where each room is assigned a mini-fridge and tea/coffee service in an adjoining hall area). Decorated and furnished with impeccable taste and high-style, each bed chamber is replete with every amenity conceivable for total relaxation. From the feather beds to the heated towel rods, guests experience uncompromised quality at this stellar bed and breakfast inn. The inn’s hospitality and service mirror these high standards.
     Mike Amery, the personable and energetic English proprietor of The Inn at Bowman’s Hill, is the multi-talented visionary responsible for this highly acclaimed property. Not only is Mike a generator of original ideas, but he knows how to make them happen.
     After experiencing hundreds of top-notch bed and breakfast inns, it takes a lot more to “wow” me than it once did. However, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is a B&B that evokes utterances of “wow!” from the time one arrives until their time of departure. Too often the adjective “luxurious” is indiscriminately used in the marketing of B&Bs; I have only visited a few B&Bswhich I consider truly befitting of such a description. Not only does The Inn at Bowman’s Hill capture the true essence of luxury and hospitality, it embodies and redefines the bed and breakfast experience at its best—even for the most discerning traveler who is unwilling to settle for anything less than the crème de la crème in lodging, amenities, and personal service.
